Jenni Young homeschools her four children and is a graduate of the CiRCE apprenticeship. She walks with Jesus, who finds her every time she gets lost, and she believes education at its best is about remembering, resting in, and returning to Him.
The families behind this grand idea.
“We’re the Hlushaks – of Faith, for Each Other, in the Fray!” Our family motto, often said in various volumes among our four children as we head to places in our van, keeps our minds on the mission. We are here for Christ, doing our work with faith, together, and differently from the world.
Andy is a senior level creative with a passion to make things beautiful because it brings glory to God. He is also a teacher deep down, always ready for deep discussions, and has taught many lectures on Christ and culture in our Denver days. Lauren is making culture in the home through read alouds, life lessons, and Friday night pizza. She also produces and hosts the She Proves Faithful Podcast to encourage women to think biblically and live faithfully.
We began our home education journey early on after a friend invited us to a homeschool conference in Denver. Then we became familiar with the classical philosophy and found that the tools of classical education provide a logical statemicatic (and restful!) approach to learning: start with the facts, cultivate understanding, and form an opinion. With this simple progression we believe we are raising up children who know how to learn and think. Our family has been involved in various classical cooperatives as well as started a classical cooperative in our church in Denver to answer a need among the congregation.
That’s why we are launching this classical Christian conference for the Tallahassee region. We want to spread the joy and art of learning, while learning from others in order to be potent in our parenting and educating. If we want to raise culture shakers and culture shapers who are potent in this world for Christ’s Kingdom, we must be raising children who can think rightly about God and His world. We want to be life long learners with other Christians in Tallahassee with a heart to raise up joyful culture shapers for Christ.
Dr. John Hallas and Katie Hallas are environmental scientists with extensive experience in Florida’s water resources and policies. As scientists, their love of learning and pondering runs deep. This love carries over into the home education of their five children.
They first learned about Christian classical education in 2011 after the birth of their first child. Since then, they have spent countless hours reading and attending classes, workshops, and conferences to further their knowledge of Christian classical education. Their family shares a passion for lifelong learning and for pursuing virtue as well as truth, goodness, and beauty rooted in the ultimate Logos, Christ.
They are eager to continue to cultivate and strengthen a community of likeminded Tallahassee-area families committed to this model of education as they jointly pursue wisdom and virtue with Christ at the center. In their free time, their family enjoys singing psalms and hymns, reading, working in their gardens, and partaking in many outdoor pursuits.
